How to Surround Yourself with Real Beauty

July 6th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Uncategorized

How do you surround yourself with Real Beauty? No, I am not talking about a room filled with magazine covers or celebrities but the kind of beauty that comes from within. Sometimes people have a wall of resistance of talking about beauty and the real meaning of it in our lives. Beauty comes in so many forms, but the most substantial and sustainable beauty comes from the natural state of being. It’s ironic how we can in our thinking disconnect from the most beautiful thing about us-the present. When we are twenty and in a physical state that we will not hang on to… we don’t even realize that we are beautiful because we are just as distracted by the things we are supposed to be doing for our future. When we arrive into the future and have achieved success-personally, professionally and spiritually we long for what we had physically at twenty.

I like to think of it as tree wisdom. A young sapling just grows instinctively, it doesn’t compare itself to the larger tree next door or across the field, it just grows toward the sun. As the tree becomes stronger and older it becomes the support system for the eco-environment  and all that rely on it’s being there for the bigger picture.

Perhaps it is time to look at what we can do to connect to our real beauty that defines us by the actions that we live and how we give our branches to others. Stop worrying about the beautiful little sapling for it knows not how beautiful it really is. Embrace what is yours and what you cannot change about your individual beauty. Reach for the essence of beauty that you can change from the inside out and gravitate to the others who live their life cultivating their own grace.

The First Five Things you can Change in Your Bathroom Today

June 24th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

So you’ve read my book, heard me on the radio and or saw me at a presentation where I explained that 95% of everything we put on ourselves is not friendly to us or the environment.

You head to your bathroom and start reading the labels of everything you’ve got and that my friends- is GREAT!

Let’s look at the first five things you can do to improve your consumption of hazardous materials that are lurking in the products that have been so brilliantly marketed to you that you just “apply as directed”.

#1.) Turn your shampoo bottle over- read the ingredients. If there are sulphates listed- sodium lauryl and laureth- toss it out. I am inclined to tell you to take it to the hazardous waste site as the above listed ingredients contain petroleum derived contaminates 1,4 dioxane that are probable human carcinogens according to the EPA. The first time you use a non sulphate shampoo your hair will be one shade lighter (free of the trapped soap suds), dry in half the usual time, and be squeaky clean.

#2.) If you are using a skin care cleanser check for the same ingredients- you will be amazed at what is in your facial cleanser, shaving cream and body wash! ( I think we already have 4 items!)

#3.) This is a touchy subject but get to the facts right now women and any men who care about women, the Feminine Hygiene Products being offered to us gals are about 98% garbage. There are two companies or 2% of every tampon company in the U.S. that are not chlorine bleached (which releases dioxin into our uteruses) and potentially filled with phthalates found in the artificial fragrance added to 90% of feminine hygiene products. The companies that make these tampons are Seventh Generation and Natracare. If you can’t sense the difference the first time you put a non toxic tampon in you have become another DESENSITIZED consumer…but it won’t take you long to make a change. If you wouldn’t put the ingredients in your mouth why would you put it anywhere else?

#4.) What you use on your face for skin-care and makeup enters your bloodstream via your skin. Your skin is the largest organ in your body. What are you saturating your body in? I know it sounds gross but if you think about it when you apply something to your skin it starts to cook on and in it. 98.6 degrees as a matter of fact. Anderson Cooper’s level of phthalates was over 95% of his blood burden test and the cause-his professional makeup on set. Take a look at your makeup… does it meet the European Union standard of non-toxicity? You can go to www.campaignforsafecosmetics.org and find out for yourself.

#5.) Does the perfume and or cologne you are using contain phthalates, allergens, formaldehyde and or sensitizers? Your  favorite bottles may not even list these ingredients but if it doesn’t state what is really in the ingredients than put it aside. Let your nose be the test. If it knocks you out on the first whiff it isn’t great for you to consume. When there is not a source of the fragrance ( like made from  real essential rose, lemon, lavender concentrate) skip it. There are great scents available online or in your favorite natural food stores that won’t make you sick. One of my faves is Aroma M essential roll-on perfumes at www.aromamperfume.com.

Happy demystifying your bathroom!

Anderson Cooper has presence of Phthalates in Body Burden Blood test, How about you? od test

June 17th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized, phthalates

Over a year ago Anderson Cooper had a body burden blood assessment, a complex comprehensive blood test, measuring chemicals in the blood foreign to the body. His phthalate level was over 95% and a real cause of wonderment. The first thought of his exposure to phthalates was from the heavy makeup applications that are considered normal for television and the movies. For those of us who wear or “consume” makeup on a daily basis you would think it would be a real matter of concern. When was the last time you turned your bottle of makeup over for the ingredient list? If you don’t recognize any of those chemical names you can always go to www.safecosmetics.org or www.NaturalNews.com

Pull Down your Vinyl Shower Curtains and Toss your Tampons

June 15th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Uncategorized

Vinyl shower curtains have now been linked to serious health problems according to a report on June 12th from the researchers from the Virginia based Center for Health, Environment & Justice where retailers were asked to pull their curtains off the shelves. If you read my recommended books to read you would know that there are many references to this problem in the book “Exposed” and in the book “Not Just Another Pretty Face” the Ugly side of the beauty industry. High concentrations of phthalates effect reproduction and are considered to be hazardous air pollutants. Phthalates are used in artificial fragrance which is added to almost everything Americans consume for personal care. One of those items are tampons and the fact that 98% of the tampons on the market contain phthalates in one form or another that adhere to the skin. Not great news for us women. There are only 2 companies providing non-chlorine bleached tampons without fragrance and those are Seventh Generation and Natracare. While you are throwing out your shower curtain throw the tampons out with it!

Dear Jude,

On behalf of my colleagues and our students at the Michael G. Foster School of Business, I wish to thank you for the outstanding guest lecture you shared with the Advanced Business Communications participants this month. These graduating seniors can be a tough crowd at times, yet you worked with them as if you’d known them for years.

The students have already begun to act on some of the suggestions you offered regarding their looking and acting with the confidence, passion and grace it takes to succeed in today’s business environment. Your professional coaching–offered with clear but gentle critique–were extremely helpful to the members of this class. I’ve also begun to carefully consider my own progress and ask how my levels of both stress and joy lead to productivity and accomplishment.

Dean Jiambalvo has charged the members of the Michael G. Foster School of Business faculty with the task of building one of the finest-top ranking- business schools in the United States. You’ve helped me to do my part in this grand plan by sharing your time, knowledge and skill with our graduating senior class.

Thank you so much for your generosity and for what you’ve done for our students. It means a great deal.

Yours most sincerely,

Jessica H. Stone, Ph.D.

Pretty in Pink

May 20th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

I was amazed when a friend told me that a family just moving here from Thailand purchased a box of tampons and put them on display in there home because they had thought the box was so pretty. If we think pretty is…is pretty does than this is a classic display of American marketing and know how. The choices for biodegradable shampoo are merely 5% of what is currently on the market for consumers to choose from to make healthy conscientious choices. The choices for non polluting feminine hygiene products are about 1%. That means that 99% of the products offered to women on a daily basis are chlorine bleached (that releases dioxin), filled with rayon (made from processed wood fiber), polyester, polyethylene, polysorbate 20 and phthalates from the artificial fragrance that are made to adhere to our skin. A woman uses over 10,000 tampons in her female experience of life and it’s amazing how are choices are pretty much made around the design of the box and the message of marketing. The only two companies that I currently know of that are made from organic cotton and chlorine free are Seventh Generation and Natracare. Women’s feminine organ diseases are on the rise. There are some critical links to what we choose to consume both internally and externally. Think twice the next time you are standing in front of the tampon aisle and ask yourself really how pretty is this product and would I consider putting it into my mouth? Women, it’s the same thing!
